Who and Where We Are

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood is located approximately 20 kilometres east of the City of Peterborough. Highway #7 runs through the northern portion of the Township, with Rice lake and the Trent River located at the southern boundary. Peterborough County Roads 40 and 45 run north and south through the Township, with the urban centre of Norwood intersecting these roads at Highway #7. Peterborough County Road 2 runs south of the Township to the north of Rice Lake and Trent River.

The Township has a population of just fewer than 4,000 with a small portion of these residents being seasonal. In 1998 the Village of Norwood and the Township of Asphodel amalgamated to form the new Township, and this has created a balanced rural and urban economic community. The Township contains concentrations of this population in urban centre Norwood, the hamlet of Westwood, rural residential areas including Trentview Estates (near Hastings) and Asphodel Heights.

The Township is situated within the rural/recreational environment of the Kawarthas and as such functions, among other things as a local focal point and hinterland service centre.

Natural Physical Features

The Ouse River flows diagonally through the Township and specifically through the Village of Norwood. The river created a pleasing physical environment through mature vegetation along it's banks, and widens to the north of the urban centre of Norwood, creating two (2) relatively large ponds.

The Ouse River supports a cold water fishery and wildlife habitat. Due consideration given to natural resource protection and the possible impacts that urban development may have on the watercourse, downstream wetlands and natural habitat.

Another natural feature of significance is the Norwood Esker, which contains a high potential source of aggregates. The Esker is also the main source for the Urban centre of Norwood's Water supply. Excess water from the Esker flows into the Mill Pond, which has been a recreational swimming area in the past.

Local Economy

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood displays a number of characteristics synonymous with a number of early settlement nodes, including a river for water power; a mill pond and dam for mills; a railway for long-distance transportation; junction of major roadways acting as a focal point; a number of old commercial buildings suggesting an early point of commerce for the agricultural hinterland; a large and diverse agricultural economy; a large aggregate industry; lumber mills and a number of large old homes characteristic of a retirement environment for the farming community.

The Township's main commercial core is provided in Norwood, which has businesses that are of a local convenience type in nature. Specialty and/or infrequent purchases generally take place outing. Motor vehicle sales establishments are an exception to this pattern.

Norwood District High School and the Fire Training Academy are well-established educational institutes that provide employment for many in the community. The high school has recently commenced a Hockey Skills school which is targeted an increasing enrollment in the school and taking advantage of the new Recreational Facility.

The Township lacks accommodation for overnight visits. Although the community draws a large market of seasonal residents, short stays are not possible with the exception of a new Bed and Breakfast establishments in the area, or travel to Peterborough for hotel and motel accommodations.
